Bond denied for suspect involved in shooting call, chase

SUMTER, SC (March 17, 2023) – Bond was denied this morning for a Rembert man, who was wanted by an outside agency and was suspected in a shooting call that preceded a police pursuit earlier this week.

Andre Laquan Anderson, 40, of Richbow Road, was placed in custody Wednesday night following a pursuit by county and city law enforcement agencies, which resulted in a crash of a Sumter Police Department officer on the U.S. 76/378 Bypass. 

The officer, whose name has not been released, is expected to recover but remains in a Columbia hospital in stable condition. An investigation of the crash is continuing by the S.C. Highway Patrol and the Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.

Sumter Police officers were first called after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when shots were fired into a Willow Drive home.

A Sumter County Sheriff’s Office deputy then spotted a vehicle described in the shooting call and attempted to stop it when a pursuit involving both agencies began and continued until Anderson’s vehicle crashed on North Pike West at U.S. 521 North. Anderson then ran into the woods before he was detained.

Anderson is being held at the local detention center. He is charged by the Sumter Police Department with attempted murder, discharging a firearm into a dwelling, unlawful carry of a pistol and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. Additional charges by the city are pending.

Anderson also faces charges by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and an unrelated failure to stop charge by the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Investigations are continuing.
