What better way to keep warm on those chilly nights than to snuggle with a new pet? And you get an added benefit: A faithful companion throughout the year!
Sumter County Animal Services is holding a special pet adoption weekend Dec. 9-11 called “Home for the Holidays.” With approximately 200 dogs and cats available, finding the perfect pet should be easy.
Of course, owning a pet is a commitment and responsibility for your furry new family member. Some keys to keep in mind with pet ownership include:
Use caution during introductions.
Allow your new pet to familiarize itself with its new home.
Introduce your pets in controlled situations.
Give them time; do not force them together or leave them unattended.
Praise, praise, praise; and give lots of rewards for good behavior.
When introducing a cat to a dog, DO NOT hold the cat in your arms.
Give your pets separate food and water bowls, and feed in separate spaces.
Be mindful that conflicts may arise when toys, food or other high-value items are present.
Be especially careful when introducing dogs or cats to caged animals.
Always supervise your pets until you are sure they get along. Until then, separate your pets by confining at least one of them to its own room. Only allow them to interact with each other with your supervision.
While all animals at Sumter County Animal Services are treated professionally by a veterinarian and staff as well as spayed/neutered and vaccinated, it is advised to bring your new dog or cat to your own veterinarian. It’s important to establish a relationship for you and your pet with a vet just as it is for you to have your own doctor.
