City of Center Hill issued the following announcement on Jan. 29.
On the evening of Wednesday, January 15, 2020, Sumter County Fire and EMS units responded to a residential fire alarm in Sumterville. The call originated from an alarm company followed by dispatch from the Fire & EMS communications center at 7:06 pm, indicating a smoke alarm in the residence was activated. During the response, communications center staff were able to reach a disoriented resident on the phone. Upon receiving this additional information, the responding Lieutenant upgraded the call and requested additional resources. Upon their arrival at 7:18 pm, Sumter County Fire and EMS Ladder 11 found the home filled with smoke and an adult male victim semi-conscious lying on the floor. Ladder 11 firefighters made entry through the front door, removed the man from the smoke-filled home, and provided medical care in advance of the EMS transport unit. EMS transported the victim to the hospital in stable condition. The origin of the fire was the oven. Both the presence of the smoke alarm monitor and the decisive response of Sumter County Fire and EMS helped save the resident.
Sumter County would like to remind residents to test their smoke alarms and regularly change the batteries to ensure they work properly in the event of a fire.
