We often hear of firefighters rescuing a cat stuck in a tree or on a pole, but a dog trapped in a reclining chair? Sumter County Fire and EMS recently rescued a dog that was trapped in a recliner.
On Friday, November 11, there was a 911 call regarding a trapped dog. Elwood, a 15-year-old blind dog, somehow managed to get under the recliner and caught his hind leg in its gearing.
“We arrived on scene and assessed the situation, and we first tried to slowly reverse the recliner but that didn’t work well. After talking to the owners, we decided to start disassembling the recliner to release the dog’s leg from the recliner. After we freed the dog’s leg, we checked out his leg and noticed he had some missing hair and some small marks on his leg from the gearing. We advised the owners to seek medical treatment for the dog to make sure that his leg was ok. After that, we reassembled the recliner for the owners. They thanked us for taking the time and effort to free their dog,” said Lt. Harold Jacques, Sumter County Fire and EMS.
On Monday, Nov. 14, Elwood and his owners showed up at the station with a cake and a thank you card with a picture of the dog in it. “The couple again thanked us for making the effort to free their dog. We explained that we all own dogs and it was pleasure to help,” Lt. Jacques added.
The owners took Elwood to a veterinarian and confirmed it did not have any broken bones.
