During the opening quarter of 2026, Cypress Care Center ranked as the largest nursing home in Sumter County, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The facility was licensed for 180 beds, exceeding the county average by 73 as of the first quarter of 2026. It accommodated an average of 168.3 residents per day throughout the period.

The CMS assigned an overall rating of 2 out of 5 to Cypress Care Center, which falls short of Florida’s average nursing home score of 3.3.

Buffalo Crossings Healthcare & Rehabilitation Cen was the county’s second largest, with 120 beds, while Club Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center at the V ranked third, offering 68 beds.

For the first quarter of 2026, Cypress Care Center incurred a total of $38,160 across two fines and was penalized on two occasions.

There were four for-profit nursing facilities operating in Sumter County, Florida.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate a continued increase in the nation’s older adult population as numbers of younger individuals decline. From 2020 to 2024, the Americans aged 65 and over population grew by 13%, while those younger than 18 fell by 1.7%. Over the past hundred years, the older adult population has expanded significantly, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 research brief estimates that about half of adults in this demographic, approximately 28 million people, may need long-term services or support. The same report also indicates that more than one-third could require care in a nursing facility.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
